چکیده

We have seen, with some paternal pride, the first issue of EMBO Molecular Medicine (EMM). I am pleased to see the quality of the articles and the many lively sections of the journal; even more so because despite the excitement for this new initiative, I was slightly apprehensive about what seems to be a neverending proliferation of scientific journals. In the case of EMM, however, I feel that there is a need to fill the gap that appears to exist between basic research, its application and clinical experimentation, a gap that also impacts on the scientific life and research activity of many of us. To fill this gap we are moving into a largely unexplored territory, where the excitement of providing new therapies for otherwise incurable diseases must often cope with a number of problems and risks.

How inclusion of genetic counselors on the research team can benefit translational science.

Translational research in medicine is necessarily a team-based endeavor, and, indeed, translational research teams often include researchers from many different disciplines. We outline some of the practical challenges that are particularly salient to translational research, both for scientists and study participants, and propose that genetic counselors--a group of specialty-trained health care ...

Meeting the governance challenges of next-generation biorepository research.

Advances in clinical translational research have led to an explosion of interest in infrastructure development and data sharing facilitated by biorepositories of specimens and linked health information. These efforts are qualitatively different from the single-center sample collections that preceded them and pose substantial new ethics and regulatory challenges for investigators and institution...

The Continuing Challenges of Translational Research: Clinician-Scientists' Perspective

Over the last twenty years, revolutionary advances in biomedicine including gene therapy, stem cell research, proteomics, genomics and nanotechnology have highlighted the progressive need to restructure traditional approaches to basic and clinical research in order to facilitate the rapid, efficient integration and translation of these new technologies into novel effective therapeutics. Over th...

MicroRNAs: Critical Regulators of mRNA Traffic and Translational Control with Promising Biotech and Therapeutic Applications

Context:MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of short, endogenously-initiated, non-coding RNAs that post-transcriptionally control gene expression via translational repression or mRNA turnover. MiRNAs have attracted much attention in recent years as they play critical roles in gene expression and are promising tools with many biotech and therapeutic applications. The molecular mechanisms und...
